Skagit River Ranch Newsletter August 2015

August 18th, 2015

Hello everyone,

We have had the hottest summer on record here in Washington State! I hope you all are enjoying the sunny weather. Although we’ve enjoyed the sunshine, this has been a difficult year for a grass farmer like us. The drought has caused an extreme shortage of grass which has made it very difficult to finish our cattle on time, and has forced us to purchase expensive organic hay on the market. With no 2nd and 3rd cutting of hay for the winter, it will be the most expensive winter for us ever. Send all your prayers and good thoughts our way so we can survive this year!

On a brighter note, our turkeys are growing well, so if you want to secure your Thanksgiving turkey, please sign up. As usual, we will try our best to get you the weight you desire, but know that there is no guarantee (so you know before you send in your $50 deposit to secure your purchase). You can email us or you can sign up at the Farmer Markets and our Farm Store. Please let us know what approx. size you are looking for: small (approx. 8-12 lbs.), medium (approx. 13-16 lbs.) or large (approx. 20 lbs. and up); your pick up location: Farm, University Farmer’s Market or Ballard Farmer’s Market; and we will need a good contact phone number. Turkeys are $7.75/lb. This year’s Pick Up Dates are:

Saturday, November 14th at either our Farm Store or the University Farmer’s Market
Sunday, November 15th at the Ballard Farmer’s Market.

You can also sign up for Bone-In Ham at $7.25/lb.

This little segment on eggs aired on NPR news the other day, a 3 minute interview with a Bastyr University Professor talking about our egg’s nutritional quality. (Click on the link below.) Enjoy.

Enjoy the rest of summer!
